This sucks

Running. Jogging. Gasping for breath. It sucks. I've been "trying" to get into running this summer. I started last fall, and then the holidays came along, and staying inside drinking hot chocolate and eating ooey gooey butter bars took precedence over jiggling my booty.

So I started up again this spring/summer. I have absolutely no stamina. Jog to the end of the street? Nope. I'm not athletic. I was in band. Yellow Big Bird feather hat plume and all. Holla to the woodwinds!

My initial goal has been to lose weight. I'm 30 and one bite of a candy bar seems to add on 5 pounds. It's rough in this new age demographic. I have lost some weight, and that's my inspiration to keep going. My second goal is to gain some stamina, so I don't have to catch my breath after walking up a flight of stairs. I'm still working on that.

I haven't gotten very far with this. I don't want to do Couch to 5K because I'll disappoint myself if I don't get better. I've looked at it and estimate that I'm around week 4 right now. I just run. I don't know distance. I just know I can run down that street corner to that one and I couldn't do that 2 months ago. (That makes me sound like a hooker.)

I'm still working on this. My goal is run a 5K eventually. I don't have a timeline. Maybe that's my problem. Maybe I need a timeline to push myself harder. I've gotten pretty sick twice this year. (Currently right now.) So I haven't run in a few weeks because I sound like a 20-year-veteran smoker at the moment hacking up my lungs.

But I've learned a few important things along the way. I'll share them now.....

1. A padded sports bra is a must. I've got cupcakes, not mountains. But the cupcakes still hurt when they jiggle too much.

2. Champion brand is awesome. From sports bras to tanks to shorts to the socks with the "handles" on the back. Thank you Target.

3. Those socks with the "handles" on the back that prevent shoes from rubbing your heels. Genius.

4. The right shoes. I've always loved New Balance brand. Until I started running . They fit my foot funny, and I end up looking like one of the those awkward running dudes.

So I found some Adidas shoes at TJ Maxx for a steal, and they fit my foot perfectly.

5. Carry a paper towel to wipe sweat out of your eyes. Burning contacts from sweat is a pain. I have a lil wristlet thing I carry when I walk the dog / run that holds my phone, keys, and pepper spray. Mom and Dad would be proud of the pepper spray. I'm packing heat.

6. Most importantly, I've found some great blogs to read that are beyond inspirational. These girls are waaaaay more advanced than me, but they inspire me to keep going. I've even gotten feedback from some of them that was extremely helpful.

So thank you girls for being my personal trainers.

I think I'm going to go order several of these shirts from THIS Etsy seller ......

And then spend a day on the couch. Coughing. Exciting Sunday y'all.

Sorry you're feeling crappy. I laughed at your band comment because even if I still had the metabolism of my high school self, I'm pretty sure running backward on your tiptoes, while blowing air, moving fingers, peripheral visioning out the wazoo, all while sweating in a wool suit 4 times a week is the best way to be ridiculously fit.

Running does suck and I, too, am trying to get into it, and you'd think that running would incite me to learn glycolysis and become one with the lactate dehydrogenase causing the stitch in my liver, but it doesn't. Instead, I eat M&Ms.

haha oh girl this is awesome!! Not that you currently 'hate running' but that you're working on it... I remember it being just as hard when I first started - and I'm still not good by any means but have come a long way!

Just getting out there is good... and working cardio in general will help you go longer, so eliptical is a good way to cross train. I love those inspirational blogs too... gives you something to motivate you when ya feel lazy :) Have you checked out skinnyrunner.com? She is another good one.

HILARIOUS t shirt find. I almost wish someone would wear that in a race!

Anywho -- you can do it!!!

I feel you...i turn 30 in February and my metabolism has just up & left the building. Even though i've been running (on & off) for around 4 years, I still suck at it. Oh, and heeeeey Arkansas! I grew up in Springdale.
